# Greenies and Homemade Treats: Different Jobs

- **By:** Alex Willen

**TL;DR:** Greenies and homemade treats aren't really competing products, they do different jobs. Greenies are a dental chew, formulated and marketed for daily use to reduce tartar and plaque, running about $1.22 an ounce and 88 calories per Regular-size treat. Homemade mixes like ours are reward and bonding treats, short ingredient lists, no dental claims, around 20 calories each. The real question isn't which one to buy, it's how to split your dog's daily treat calories between the two if you want both. Here's the math.

We're not going to pretend our biscuits and Pupsicles do what Greenies do, because they don't. Greenies are built and sold as a dental product. Ours are built and sold as a treat you make yourself from simple ingredients. Comparing them head to head on "which is better" misses the point, they're answering different questions. What's actually useful is understanding what each one is for, and how they fit into the same dog's day without blowing the calorie budget.

## What's on the Greenies Label

Greenies Original Regular Dental Dog Treats list their ingredients as: Chicken, Glycerin, Wheat Flour, Wheat Gluten, Vegetable Oil, Dried Corn Syrup, Caramel Color, Natural Flavor, Natural Hickory Smoke Flavor, Water, Citric Acid (preservative), Mixed Tocopherols (preservative), Vinegar, Rosemary Extract.

A Regular-size treat runs 88 calories. The 27 ounce package lists for $32.98, which works out to about $1.22 an ounce, on the higher end of what treats generally cost. The package's own feeding guidance for a 25 to 50 pound dog is one treat a day, and it tells you to cut 88 calories from that dog's regular meal to offset it. That's the brand itself acknowledging this is a meaningful calorie chunk, not a light snack.

## What Greenies Are Actually For

Greenies market the product on a specific, repeated set of claims printed on their own packaging: "47% less tartar, 40% less plaque in 28 days," described as "4-in-1 Action" for plaque, tartar, gums, and breath. It's positioned as rawhide-free and for daily use, one a day, sized to the dog's weight.

We're relaying what's printed on the box, not independently testing dental outcomes ourselves, that's not something we're set up to verify. What we can say plainly: a daily chew built specifically around dental mechanics is a different product category than a treat built around ingredients and flavor. If dental health is the goal, a purpose-built dental chew is the more direct tool for that job.

## Where Homemade Treats Fit Instead

Our mixes were never built to be dental chews, and we're not going to claim otherwise. What they're built for is being a treat you feel good about handing over, a short ingredient list, no added sugar or salt, and no preservatives or artificial flavors, sourced and made in the USA. A 4.3 ounce jar of Pupsicle Mix costs $12.49 and makes about 25 frozen treats at roughly 20 calories each. Our Baked Biscuit Mix runs the same $12.49 and lets you control biscuit size, and therefore calories, yourself.

These are reward treats and bonding treats, the kind you use for training, for "good dog," for a lick mat on a rainy afternoon. If your dog also needs help with dental health, that's a separate need a homemade biscuit or frozen Pupsicle isn't formulated to solve, and we'd rather say that outright than dress up a treat as something it isn't.

## The Calorie Math, Split Two Ways

A medium dog eating roughly 700 calories a day has about a 70 calorie treat budget. A single Greenies Regular treat is 88 calories, over that entire budget by itself, which is exactly why the package tells you to cut calories from the dog's meal to make room for it.

If you want to give both a daily dental chew and some reward treats, the math has to include all of it. One realistic split for that same medium dog: a smaller dental chew sized to actual body weight (Greenies sells multiple sizes matched to dog weight, check the one intended for your dog, not just "Regular" by default), plus one or two 20 calorie homemade treats for training or reward moments, staying inside the daily budget instead of stacking a full-size dental chew on top of a normal day of treats.

Sizing matters here more than with most treats. Greenies packaging ties each size to a weight range, and using a size built for a bigger dog on a smaller one both overshoots the calorie math and defeats the point of a "sized to your dog" dental product. If you're not sure which size fits, that's a question for the package itself, not a guess.

## Small Dogs and Training-Heavy Households

The calorie math gets tighter fast for small dogs. A 15 pound dog eating around 400 calories a day has roughly a 40 calorie treat budget, well under a single Greenies Regular at 88 calories. That's exactly why size selection matters so much with a dental chew, and it's also where low-calorie reward treats earn their keep. If you're doing a lot of training reps in a session, a stack of 2 calorie treats does the job without eating into the day's total the way even one wrong-sized dental chew would.

Our mixes work fine in that role too. A frozen Pupsicle or a small cut baked biscuit gives you a treat small enough to hand out several times during a training session, and because you're the one portioning it, you can cut pieces down as small as a session calls for.

## Spec Comparison

| Product | Job | Price Per Ounce | Calories |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Baked Biscuit Mix or Pupsicle Mix (Cooper's Treats)** | **Reward / bonding treat** | **~$0.50 per treat (25 per $12.49 jar)** | **~20 cal per treat** |
| Greenies Original Regular | Daily dental chew | ~$1.22 per oz | 88 kcal per treat |

## Buy Greenies If

- Dental health, tartar, and plaque are the actual goal, not just a snack.
- You're willing to size the chew correctly for your dog's weight and account for the calories in their daily total.
- You want a single product that does one job well, on a daily schedule.

## Reach for Homemade Treats If

- You want a reward or training treat with a short, plain ingredient list.
- You want low-calorie treats you can give a few times a day without eating into your dog's meal budget.
- You're not trying to solve a dental problem with this particular treat.

You don't have to pick one lane. Plenty of dogs do fine with a daily dental chew and a separate rotation of reward treats, as long as the calorie math accounts for both. Our [Beef and Cheddar Baked Biscuit Mix](https://coopersdogtreats.com/products/beef-and-cheddar-baked-biscuit-mix) or [Chicken and Sweet Potato Pupsicle Mix](https://coopersdogtreats.com/products/chicken-and-sweet-potato-pupsicle-mix) both work well as the reward side of that split.
